Pawley's Island in the time of Covid

ANDREW BOYD July 28, 2020

It was a decision fraught with more than a bit of terror and trepidation—to go to Pawleys Island for a week of landscape and nature photography or stay safe, hunkered down at home?  The Covid-19 case numbers were trending higher in South Carolina, but actually not higher than the stupid-high numbers at home in Louisiana; would it really make much difference which hotspot I spent the week in? Eventually, armed with face masks, Lysol spray and alcohol wipes, we headed out, determined to spend a week staring at something besides our own 4 walls at home.

My wife and I have been road warriors since the earliest days of our relationship. As crazy as it might sound, driving 800 miles in a day is not something that gives us much pause.  We didn’t want to risk a hotel room and once at Pawleys Island we would have a beach house all to ourselves.

The experts have said that the beach with its ocean breezes is one of the safer outdoor spaces to occupy. Early in the morning is also one of my favorite times to photograph and the sands, surf and sky make for fantastic inspiration. Nearby Huntington Beach State Park is also an amazing place to photograph shore birds. So here are some of the preliminary images from our photo safari. Eventually some of these images, once edited carefully and toned, may end up over on my art photography website. Hope these brighten your day!

It was great to be out working on a project today—even if it meant wearing a hot sticky mask in 95 degree heat!
